HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10: EOL and EOSL

The ProLiant DL380 Gen10 came to market in mid-2017 and has since stood in many data centres as the standard 2U server for virtualisation, databases and file services. HPE stopped selling the ProLiant DL380 Gen10 in May 2024. The successor range, the Gen10 Plus, followed in 2021 and is now in the EOL process itself.

The following overview lists all configure-to-order (CTO) models of both generations with their part number, the official end of sales and end of support, and the period for which Hardwarewartung.com continues to maintain the servers.

HPE announces lifecycle data through Product Change Notifications (PCN). For the DL380 Gen10, the PCN “HPE ProLiant DL360/DL380 Gen10 Servers: End Of Life (EOL) Process Dates” applies; for the Gen10 Plus, the PCN covering the DL345/DL360/DL365/DL380 Gen10 Plus servers. Both documents sit in the HPE Support Center and can only be read in full with an HPE account.

Alongside the CTO chassis, HPE sold numerous preconfigured standard models (BTO) with fixed processor, memory and controller configurations. They are based on the same chassis and follow the same lifecycle dates as the corresponding CTO model.

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10

The HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 works with first and second generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Skylake and Cascade Lake) with up to 28 cores per socket. The mainboard offers 24 DDR4 slots at up to 2933 MT/s, up to eight PCIe 3.0 slots and the iLO 5 management chip with Silicon Root of Trust. Alongside the four standard chassis with 8SFF, 24SFF, 8LFF and 12LFF, Network Choice (NC) variants have been available since 2019. These have no permanently fitted 1GbE controller, so the customer is free to choose the network adapter. HPE lists the part numbers of the NC chassis in the QuickSpecs (version 41, August 2020). For US government agencies, HPE also offered TAA-compliant CTO models that meet the requirements of the Trade Agreements Act.

The Gen10 range reached its end of life on 1 May 2024. Orders through HPE OCA were still possible until 31 October 2024. From that cut-off date, HPE sells and services support contracts for at least five more years, which puts the end of support on 31 October 2029.

Some EOSL databases quote earlier dates in places. Anyone wanting to extend an existing HPE contract should therefore ask HPE directly for the end date tied to their own serial number.

HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 Plus

With the Gen10 Plus, HPE moved to third generation Xeon Scalable processors (Ice Lake) with up to 40 cores per socket. The server has 32 DIMM slots for DDR4-3200, supports PCIe 4.0 and uses the OCP 3.0 standard for networking instead of FlexibleLOM. The details are in the QuickSpecs for the DL380 Gen10 Plus.

HPE offered the Gen10 Plus only as Network Choice models. The configuration overview in the QuickSpecs lists four CTO chassis with 8SFF, 24SFF, 8LFF and 12LFF.

In March 2024, HPE support was still unable to name an EOL notice for the DL380 Gen10 Plus in the HPE Community. HPE has since published a revised PCN with the EOL process dates for the DL380 Gen10 Plus. The specific dates are only available in the protected area of the HPE Support Center.

Maintenance for the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 after EOSL

After EOSL, HPE no longer supplies new firmware versions or spare parts for these servers under a Care Pack. For many workloads such as Active Directory, file servers or smaller virtualisation clusters, the performance of a DL380 Gen10 is nevertheless sufficient for a long time yet. Replacing the hardware is then often worthwhile only because support is missing.

In Germany, Austria and Switzerland a technician is on site within four hours, and the hotline can be reached around the clock. As with the DL360 series and the 3PAR StoreServ 8000, a maintenance period of up to ten years beyond EOSL applies to the DL380 Gen10.

HPE discontinued the DL380 Gen10 as of 1 May 2024. New systems could still be ordered through HPE OCA until 31 October 2024.
