Dell PowerEdge R440: EOL and EOSL

The EOL of the Dell PowerEdge R440 is estimated at January 2023. The EOSL is expected on March 31, 2027. These are estimates, because Dell does not publish official dates.

The Dell PowerEdge R440 is a dual-socket 1U rack server from the 14th PowerEdge generation (14G). Dell lists it under regulatory model E45S and regulatory type E45S001. It has been on the market since 2017, with first- or second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors depending on the configuration.

Dell does not publish fixed EOL or EOSL dates for individual PowerEdge models. Five to seven years of support is typical, depending on how long spare parts remain available. The binding reference is therefore the contract linked to the Service Tag of each individual server.

One date is fixed, however: software maintenance for the iDRAC9 on all 14G servers ends on February 1, 2027. After that, according to Knowledge Base article 000178016, Dell is no longer obliged to fix the management controller’s firmware.

PowerEdge R440 EOL and EOSL at a glance

The following table shows the dates Hardwarewartung.com uses for planning the R440. Because Dell does not publish a model list, they are based on the end of sale of the related 14G models in our Dell PowerEdge overview. According to it, the EOL for the R540 and its 1U sibling, the R640, is January 20, 2023, and the EOSL is March 31, 2027. All three chassis versions of the R440 share the same model number and therefore have the same dates.

If you run several 14th-generation Dell servers, you will usually plan replacement or maintenance for the whole generation. The R240, R340, R540 and R640 rack servers reach their EOSL on March 31, 2027. The T440 tower reaches it earlier, on February 1, 2027.

Firmware and software: these deadlines apply to every PowerEdge R440

Dell gives no EOL or EOSL date for the Dell PowerEdge R440 hardware itself, but it does for two software components. The Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 9 (iDRAC9) on 14G servers has received no new features since June 30, 2023. Since then, Dell has only released fixes for serious vulnerabilities, most recently version 7.00.00.185 in August 2026. That ends on February 1, 2027 as well.

The OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) management tool received its final release on September 30, 2024. Until September 30, 2027, Dell will only fix security vulnerabilities and critical bugs in it. As a replacement, Dell recommends the iDRAC together with the iDRAC Service Module (iSM).

How to find the end-of-support date of your Dell PowerEdge R440

Dell shows the exact support expiration date for each device in its support portal. All you need is the seven-character Service Tag.

  1. Read the Service Tag. You can find it on the pull-out information tag on the front of the device and in the iDRAC web interface. Without physical access to the device, a command helps: on Linux dmidecode -s system-serial-number, in Windows PowerShell (Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS).SerialNumber, or in the iDRAC with racadm getsvctag.
  2. Enter the Service Tag at dell.com/support. The device page shows the type of warranty and its expiration date.
  3. Open the service events and turn off the “Only show active events” filter. You will then also see the EOSL information for the device, if Dell has stored one.

What happens after the EOSL?

The EOSL ends Dell’s spare parts and technician service for the device. The server keeps running, but operating it without maintenance is risky.

Hardwarewartung.com replaces faulty power supplies, hard drives, RAID controllers or mainboards even after official vendor support has ended. With an EOL in January 2023, the maintenance window of 7 to 10 years works out to 2030 or 2033.

No third-party maintenance provider can supply new firmware; BIOS and iDRAC remain Dell’s responsibility. If you keep running an R440 after February 2027, the iDRAC port belongs in a separate management network that cannot be reached from the internet or the office LAN. Also disable services such as IPMI over LAN if you do not need them.

For heavily loaded databases or systems with strict compliance requirements, a newer model is the safer choice. In the 1U segment, the R440’s successor is the 15th-generation PowerEdge R450. For backup targets, test systems or servers in branch offices, a maintenance contract that covers the hardware until the planned replacement is often enough.

FAQ: frequently asked questions about the PowerEdge R440

Has Dell published an official EOSL date for the R440?

No. Dell does not give model-wide dates for PowerEdge servers. The R440 dates in this article are derived from those of its sister models.

Will there still be updates for the R440 after February 1, 2027?

From the EOSL, Dell is no longer obliged to provide updates for the iDRAC9. Dell has not given an end date for the R440 BIOS. Whether further versions will be released after that is unclear.

How long can an R440 run with third-party maintenance?

Hardwarewartung.com offers maintenance for 14th-generation Dell servers for 7 to 10 years after EOL. For the R440, that corresponds to roughly 2030 to 2033.
