Dell PowerEdge R240: EOL and EOSL
The EOL of the Dell PowerEdge R240 was January 21, 2023. The EOSL is March 31, 2027.
The Dell PowerEdge R240 is a single-socket 1U rack server from the 14th PowerEdge generation (14G). Dell launched it in December 2018 for small businesses, branch offices and service providers. According to Dell’s Technical Guide, it has the regulatory model number E57S (type E57S001) and supports Xeon E-2100 and E-2200 series processors.
Sales ended in early 2023, and software maintenance for the iDRAC9 management controller ends in spring 2027. If you run an R240, you should therefore plan now what happens to the server next. Below you will find the EOL and EOSL dates of the R240 and its sister models, as well as the end-of-support dates of the most important firmware and software components.
Overview: EOL and EOSL for the R240 and related models
The R240 shares its BIOS and iDRAC firmware with the R340 and the T140 and T340 tower servers. The lifecycles of these four entry-level models therefore run largely in parallel. The dates in the table come from our EOL/EOSL list for Dell PowerEdge.

A note on context: Dell does not publish model-wide EOL or EOSL dates for individual PowerEdge servers. As a rule of thumb, support lasts about five to seven years, depending on hardware availability. Ultimately, what counts is the service contract tied to the Service Tag of each individual device. The EOSL dates in the table are therefore planning values. The earlier date for the T340 (February 1, 2027) falls on the same day that iDRAC9 software maintenance for the 14th generation ends.

Dell PowerEdge R240: technical features
The R240 is the smallest rack model in the 14G entry-level class. It holds up to four 3.5-inch drives, has four DDR4 slots for up to 64 GB of ECC UDIMM memory and a single cabled power supply rated at 250 or 450 watts. Redundant power supplies are not available for this model. If the power supply fails, the server is down until a replacement part is installed.

iDRAC9
Dell stopped developing new features for the iDRAC9 on 14G servers on June 30, 2023. Since then, the only builds released have been those Dell lists as “Discretionary Sev1 security fix”, most recently version 7.00.00.185 in August 2026. After February 1, 2027, Dell is no longer obliged to maintain the firmware or fix bugs. This is stated in Dell’s iDRAC9 support guide (KB 000178016).
OpenManage Server Administrator
Dell has discontinued the OMSA software agent. According to Dell Knowledge Base article 000224826, the final release came out on September 30, 2024. Until September 30, 2027, Dell will only fix security vulnerabilities and critical bugs. Windows Server 2025 no longer supports OMSA. As a replacement, Dell recommends the iDRAC combined with the iDRAC Service Module (iSM).
BIOS and Secure Boot
The Secure Boot certificates that Microsoft issued in 2011 began expiring in June 2026. According to Dell KB 000402373, the BIOS for the R240, R340, T140 and T340 contains the new 2023 certificates from version 2.21.0 onward. Newer versions include them as well. Install this update while Dell still provides firmware for the platform. Suspend BitLocker before the BIOS update; otherwise, you may be asked for the recovery key on restart.
VMware ESXi and Windows Server
Dell includes the R240 in its list of PowerEdge servers certified for vSphere 8.0. The compatibility matrix for ESXi 9.x no longer lists 14G servers. If you need to move to ESXi 9, you will therefore need new hardware or a different hypervisor, such as Proxmox. For Windows Server, the R240’s certification ends with version 2022.
How to check the end of support for your Dell PowerEdge R240
Because Dell does not publish a model-wide EOSL, you need to check the status of each device individually:
- Find the Service Tag: The seven-character code is on the pull-out tag on the front, on the back of the chassis and in the iDRAC dashboard. On Linux, “sudo dmidecode -s system-serial-number” reads it; on Windows, use “wmic bios get serialnumber”.
- Open the support site: Enter the Service Tag at dell.com/support.
- Check contracts: In the “Service Contracts” section, disable the “Only show active events” filter. You will then also see expired contracts and, if available, the EOSL information for this device.
Continued operation after the EOSL
An R240 that handles print services, file storage in a branch office or a test environment can keep running for years after 2027. To do so, you should mitigate two risks.
The first is the iDRAC. Without security updates, the management interface belongs in a dedicated VLAN that can only be reached from a few admin workstations. Nobody should be able to access it from the production network or the internet.
The second is the hardware. The R240 depends on a single power supply. Fans and mainboard cannot be hot-swapped. Without a Dell support contract, searching for spare parts can take the server out of action for days. A third-party maintenance contract closes this gap. Hardwarewartung.com maintains Dell servers for at least seven to ten years beyond the EOL. For the R240, with its EOL in January 2023, that works out to around 2030 to 2033.
Successors: PowerEdge R250 and R260
If you want to replace the R240, the options are the R250 (15th generation) or the R260 (16th generation). The R250 takes Xeon E-2300 processors and up to 128 GB of DDR4-3200, has PCIe Gen4 and keeps the four 3.5-inch bays. It still has no redundant power supply, however.
The R260 moves to Xeon E-2400 and DDR5 and, at around 46 cm deep, is significantly shorter. In return, it only fits two 3.5-inch drives or six 2.5-inch drives. If you use the R240 as a backup target with four large hard drives, you will need to rethink your storage plan when moving to the R260.
