NetApp FAS8200: EOL, EOSL and Your Options Afterwards

Manufacturer support for the FAS8200 ends on 30 November 2026. Before then you need to decide: migrate, move the system down a tier, or hand maintenance over to a third party provider.

What EOL means for the FAS8200

In practice, EOL at NetApp stands for two different things. The end of sales (end of availability) affected only distribution back in 2021. Maintenance contracts, firmware updates, ONTAP patches and spare parts deliveries carried on unchanged afterwards.

End of service life (EOSL) is 30 November 2026. On that day, every obligation NetApp has towards this hardware ends. There is no shutdown mechanism in the system, however: controllers, shelves, drives and the installed ONTAP version keep running. Responsibility for diagnostics, spare parts and recovery then rests entirely with the operator.

These services end on the EOSL date

  • Access to the NetApp Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and to fault analysis
  • RMA handling for defective controllers, power supplies, fans and drives
  • Guaranteed spare parts stocking in the NetApp depots
  • New firmware and microcode levels for boards, I/O modules and drives
  • Processing of AutoSupport and Call Home messages by the manufacturer

The risks that arise once support ends

Spare parts and recovery time

The FAS8200 works with two controllers in an HA pair and absorbs drive failures via RAID-DP or RAID-TEC. This redundancy covers the first failure. A further failure occurring while replacement parts are being sourced, however, cannot be ruled out.

Firmware and security vulnerabilities

For EOSL hardware, NetApp no longer ships new microcode and firmware levels. If new CVEs come to light in the Service Processor, in the BIOS or in the protocol stacks for SMB or NFS, the system remains exposed. The remaining countermeasures are network segmentation, upstream firewalls and stricter access rules.

Components with deadlines of their own

When it comes to the lifecycle dates for the FAS8200, it is worth taking a look at the inventory list as well:

  • Controllers, power supplies, fans and I/O modules (UTA2, SAS) follow the EOSL of the chassis.
  • NVMe Flash Cache: if the cache fails, all read requests go to the disks. Latency rises, but the system keeps running.
  • NVRAM battery modules age chemically. Once the buffering capacity is used up, ONTAP switches off the write cache as a precaution and write performance collapses.
  • Disk shelves have their own dates. A DS224C may still be in support while the controller in front of it has already reached EOSL.

One detail concerns older shelves: for the IOM6 modules of the DS2246, DS4246 and DS4486 series, ONTAP 9.16.1 is the last supported version. Their software support therefore ends on the same release as that of the FAS8200 itself.

ONTAP: how far does the software take you?

NetApp dropped support for the FAS8200 and AFF A300 as of ONTAP 9.17.1. The highest installable version is therefore ONTAP 9.16.1, or 9.15.1 depending on the cluster configuration.

Software support runs longer than support for the hardware. Under the NetApp model, each release receives three years of full support, followed by two years of limited and three years of self-service support:

Table: ONTAP versions for the NetApp FAS8200

In practical terms, this means: from December 2026 onwards, a FAS8200 running ONTAP 9.15.1 or higher is left with valid software and no hardware support from the manufacturer. Software patches are of little help when a board fails and nobody replaces it.

Migration

The successors in the hybrid flash segment are the FAS50, FAS70 and FAS90, alongside the older FAS8300 and FAS8700. Anyone moving to all-flash ends up with the AFF A series. The data can be transferred largely without interruption using ONTAP procedures such as Aggregate Relocation or Volume Move.

Third party maintenance

One option is third party maintenance: a third party provider such as Hardwarewartung.com takes over maintenance, monitoring and spare parts logistics from exactly the point at which NetApp support ends. This pays off above all when the FAS8200 moves into a secondary role, for example as a backup target for Veeam or Commvault, as a DR site or as a file server.

Hardwarewartung.com looks after NetApp FAS systems beyond EOSL and guarantees support for at least another seven to ten years. The setup includes more than 300 certified technicians at over 40 locations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, its own spare parts warehouses and repair times of up to four hours around the clock. AutoSupport and Call Home can still be integrated, so faults are reported as usual. Compared with a regular contract extension, costs drop by up to 50 percent.

Decision aid: how urgent is the replacement?

Table: Replacement criteria for the NetApp FAS8200

The last point is often underestimated. If a large share of the data is moving to the cloud anyway, a fresh investment in on-premises controllers shortly before the move is hard to justify. A maintenance contract bridges this phase more cheaply.

Frequently asked questions about FAS8200 EOL

Can I keep running a NetApp FAS8200 after EOL?

Technically, yes. The system continues to run with the installed ONTAP version. Without a maintenance contract, however, you carry the full risk of failure from 30 November 2026, and in audits the compensating control is missing.

How long is support available for the FAS8200?

Regular NetApp support (SupportEdge) ends on 30 November 2026. Through a third party provider, hardware maintenance can be extended by at least seven to ten years.

What happens after EOSL?

The system still boots and works. TAC access ends, AutoSupport messages are no longer processed by NetApp, RMA processes are no longer triggered, and there is no more new firmware.

Will spare parts still be available for the FAS8200?

NetApp no longer guarantees any stocking after the deadline. Because the FAS8200 runs in large numbers worldwide, the secondary market is well supplied. Maintenance providers with their own warehouses, such as Hardwarewartung.com, can deliver controllers, power supplies, Flash Cache modules and drives at short notice.

Can the FAS8200 still be operated with ONTAP?

Yes, up to and including ONTAP 9.16.1. From 9.17.1 onwards, NetApp no longer supports the platform. An installed 9.16.1 remains in full support until the end of January 2028, regardless of the status of the hardware contract.

Does a FAS8200 have to be replaced immediately because of EOL?

No. The end of sales in 2021 had no consequences for operation. Only the EOSL in November 2026 calls for a decision, and even then continued operation with third party maintenance remains a viable path.

Is third party maintenance possible for the FAS8200?

Yes. The platform has a modular design and is well documented, and spare parts are available. Maintenance contracts with SLAs of up to four hours repair time are standard for FAS systems; see storage maintenance.

Which NetApp systems are suitable successors?

In the hybrid flash range, the FAS50, FAS70 and FAS90, plus the still available FAS8300 and FAS8700. Anyone switching to all-flash will find the right counterpart in the AFF A series.
