Dell PowerEdge R940 and R940xa: EOL and EOSL

The EOL of the Dell PowerEdge R940 is June 30, 2023; the EOSL is February 1, 2027.

Dell introduced the PowerEdge R940 in summer 2017 as part of its 14th server generation. The four-socket server was designed for SAP HANA, ERP systems and large databases. In May 2018, Dell added the R940xa, a 4U variant for GPU and FPGA accelerators. Neither model has been sold new for a long time, but both are still running in many data centers.

Dell does not publish fixed EOL and EOSL dates for individual standalone servers. A moderator in the Dell Community forum states that there is neither an article nor any documentation on these dates. According to the moderator, a model’s EOL is usually five to seven years after its ship date. The dates given here come from our EOL/EOSL overview, and the model numbers come from the Dell manuals.

Table: Dell PowerEdge R940 EOL and EOSL

The model number in the table is the regulatory model designation that Dell lists on the rating label and in the manuals. The two servers have different numbers. Some overviews also list E41S for the R940xa; according to the Dell manual, this is incorrect.

Dell PowerEdge R940

According to its technical spec sheet, the Dell PowerEdge R940 fits four processor sockets into a 3U chassis. It runs first- or second-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 28 cores per CPU and offers 48 DIMM slots for up to 6 TB of DDR4 memory. The front holds up to 24 drives, of which up to 12 can be NVMe SSDs. The regulatory model number is E41S, the regulatory type E41S001.

From the EOSL on February 1, 2027, Dell will no longer supply spare parts or new BIOS and iDRAC versions for this model.

Dell PowerEdge R940xa

According to the spec sheet, “xa” stands for “Extreme Acceleration”. At 4U, the R940xa is one rack unit taller than the R940. It combines four Xeon Scalable processors with up to four double-width GPUs, such as the Nvidia Tesla P100, P40 or V100, or with up to eight FPGAs. The front holds up to 32 drives. The server has the regulatory model number E54S, type E54S001.

No official EOL or EOSL date is known for the R940xa. Because the R940xa was launched almost a year after the R940, its end of support may be later. You should therefore check the status of each device individually using its Service Tag. When it comes to maintaining the R940xa, the accelerators are key: if something fails, a maintenance partner must also be able to replace the installed data center GPUs.

How to find your server’s end-of-support date

Dell assigns the support term to each server via its seven-character Service Tag. You can find it on the pull-out information tag on the front of the chassis and in the iDRAC dashboard. On Linux, dmidecode -s system-serial-number returns the value; on Windows, use the PowerShell command Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS.

Enter the Service Tag on the Dell support site. In the service events section, you will see the End of Service Life date once you disable the “Only show active events” filter. Since October 2024, the QR code on the chassis also links directly to the model’s Dell support page, because Dell has shut down its own QRL website and app.

Update firmware before the EOSL

After the EOSL, Dell will no longer fix newly discovered vulnerabilities in the BIOS and iDRAC9. The security advisory DSA-2026-392 from September 3, 2026 shows how important the final updates are. It fixes a command injection vulnerability in iDRAC9 (CVE-2026-23855, CVSS 7.2). On 14th-generation servers such as the R940, it is only fixed as of iDRAC9 version 7.00.00.184. An older vulnerability from DSA-2025-046 affects the BIOS and iDRAC9 and is fixed on the R940 as of BIOS 2.23.0.

You should therefore install the latest versions of iDRAC, BIOS, RAID controller and CPLD before February 1, 2027. For operation after that date, the iDRAC belongs in a dedicated management VLAN with no internet connection. You should disable IPMI over LAN.

Continued operation with Hardwarewartung.com

The EOSL ends vendor support, but the hardware itself keeps running. Hardwarewartung.com maintains Dell PowerEdge servers for 7 to 10 years after the EOL. For the R940, that works out to 2030 to 2033. Spare parts come from our own warehouses, and technicians are on site within as little as four hours. Compared with extending vendor support, you save up to 50 percent.

Frequently asked questions

What do EOL and EOSL mean?

EOL (End of Life) marks the end of sale: from that day on, Dell no longer offers the model new. The EOSL (End of Service Life) marks the end of hardware support. Dell then no longer supplies spare parts or releases firmware updates for the model.

Is there an official Dell EOSL date for the R940?

Dell does not publish a list of EOSL dates for standalone servers. Hardwarewartung.com gives February 1, 2027 for the R940. A Service Tag lookup on the Dell support site shows the status for your device.

Do the R940 and R940xa have the same model number?

No. The R940 is listed as E41S (type E41S001), the R940xa as E54S (type E54S001).

How long can I run an R940 with third-party maintenance?

Hardwarewartung.com offers maintenance for 7 to 10 years after the EOL. With an EOL of June 30, 2023, that means operation until around 2030 to 2033.
