Dell PowerEdge R840: EOL and EOSL
Depending on the model, the EOSL for the Dell PowerEdge R840 falls between 30 September 2026 and 31 January 2031.
The Dell PowerEdge R840 belongs to the 14th PowerEdge generation and fits four Intel Xeon Scalable processors into a two-rack-unit chassis. Dell introduced it in May 2018. The server is available as a standalone system and as the basis for several appliances, for example for PowerFlex or Azure Stack Hub. For some of the appliances, Dell states fixed lifecycle dates. For the standalone server, Dell has not published any to this day.
The following table summarises the EOL and EOSL dates for all R840 variants. Where Dell issues no date, the figure in brackets is the one that maintenance providers use in the market.

The PowerEdge R840 as a standalone server
For the individual R840 there is no official EOL or EOSL date. A moderator in the Dell Community writes that Dell provides neither articles nor documentation on the EOL, EOSL and EOSS dates of PowerEdge servers. As a rule of thumb, he quotes five to seven years from the shipping date of the individual unit. How long Dell looks after your server therefore depends on the delivery date and on the spare parts situation.
In our overview of Dell PowerEdge EOL and EOSL, we list the fourth quarter of 2023 as the end of sales and 30 September 2026 as the end of support. That date has now passed. If you still have a current Dell contract, it is best to check the end date for each unit individually via its service tag.

PowerFlex, VxFlex and VxRack FLEX based on the R840
For the hyperconverged systems with R840 nodes, Dell states fixed dates in the support article PowerFlex: Software and Hardware End of Support and End of Life Dates. All four variants went on sale on 30 September 2019. Dell ended sales on 30 September 2024, and standard support ends on 30 September 2029.
Operators of a standalone R840 can also use these dates for planning. As long as Dell looks after the appliances, the manufacturer needs mainboards, power supplies and other parts of the R840 platform. That suggests these components will remain available in Dell’s warehouse until at least autumn 2029.

Checking the end of support for your Dell PowerEdge R840
You will find the exact EOL and EOSL date for an individual R840 via its service tag. The seven-character code appears on the pull-out information tag at the front of the chassis, on a sticker at the back and in the iDRAC dashboard. Enter it at dell.com/support and open the “Warranty and contracts” area. According to the Dell Community, the tab with the service events also shows planned lifecycle dates once you switch off the “Show active events only” toggle.
Maintenance after the EOSL with Hardwarewartung.com
Hardwarewartung.com looks after the R840 for seven to ten years beyond the end of sales. Starting from the fourth quarter of 2023, that puts the maintenance window at roughly 2030 to 2033.
After the EOSL, new BIOS or iDRAC firmware is supplied only by Dell itself. For that reason, put the management port of the iDRAC9 on its own isolated network and allow access only through a secured jump host.
You will find the data for the two-socket sister model in the article on the Dell PowerEdge R740 and R740xd.
