Enterprise Virtualization with Proxmox Virtual Environment

Many of our customers have been running their servers on VMware vSphere for years. Since the acquisition by Broadcom, they have been facing significantly higher licensing costs and are looking for an affordable alternative. In the DACH region, Proxmox Virtual Environment is the most frequently mentioned option. Since October 2026, we have been able to offer you the platform directly as an official partner and support you through the migration.

Why Many Companies Are Turning Away from VMware

Broadcom acquired VMware at the end of 2023 and then restructured the licensing model. Perpetual licenses are no longer available. Customers buy subscriptions in large bundles such as VMware Cloud Foundation. As a result, many mid-sized companies pay for features they will never use.

A well-known case shows how drastic the price increases can be: AT&T sued Broadcom over a price increase of 1,050 percent. Gartner expects that by 2028, around 70 percent of enterprise customers will move half of their virtual workloads away from VMware.

What Is Proxmox Virtual Environment?

Proxmox Virtual Environment is a complete open-source platform for enterprise virtualization. It combines the KVM hypervisor and Linux containers (LXC) with software-defined storage and networking on a single platform. It is developed by Proxmox Server Solutions GmbH, based in Vienna, which has been building server software since 2005. The current version 9.1 is based on Debian and is released under the GNU AGPL v3 open-source license. According to the vendor, the software runs on more than 2 million active hosts in over 142 countries.

Key features:

• VMs and containers on one platform: KVM provides full virtualization for Windows and Linux, while LXC runs lightweight containers with barely measurable overhead.
• High availability and live migration: Clusters operate in multi-master mode, without a separate management server and without a single point of failure. VMs move to another host while running.
• Flexible storage: local with ZFS or LVM-Thin, shared via NFS, iSCSI or FC-SAN, and distributed with integrated Ceph for hyperconverged setups.
• Built-in data protection: Backup, restore and storage replication are included, as is integration with Proxmox Backup Server.
• Software-defined networking and integrated firewall: Manage VLANs, VXLAN and EVPN centrally.
• Management via web interface, command line or REST API, with two-factor authentication and integration with LDAP and Active Directory.
• Import wizard that migrates VMs directly from VMware ESXi.

Proxmox VE can also be used to build metro clusters spanning two data centers, for example with Ceph in stretch mode. This requires a very low-latency connection (under 5 milliseconds) and a third site that casts the deciding cluster vote when needed.

Keep Using Your Existing Hardware

Proxmox Virtual Environment runs on a wide range of standard x86-64 servers, including older models. There is no strict hardware compatibility list as with VMware. As a result, companies that migrate can often keep running their existing servers.

Proxmox Subscriptions at a Glance

A Proxmox subscription gives you access to the stable Enterprise Repository with tested updates and security patches, as well as to Proxmox technical support. Pricing is per server and per physically populated CPU socket; the number of cores does not matter. All nodes in a cluster run on the same tier. The term is one, two or three years.

There is also the “Community” tier. It includes the Enterprise Repository but no vendor support, and is suitable for getting started and for test environments.

Proxmox Mail Gateway is an open-source email security solution. It sits between the firewall and the internal mail server and filters spam, viruses and malicious attachments before they reach a mailbox. The subscription applies per host and covers any number of users and domains.
