GlobalConnect has begun laying a new submarine cable that will connect Sweden and Finland via Åland. This investment is part of a broader strategy to expand the fiber optic network in both countries. The maritime surveys for the project are already underway. The 150-kilometer cable, which will land in Turku, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026 and has a volume of 14 million euros. To ensure sufficient signal strength, two new inline amplifier stations (ILA) will be built.
The current geopolitical situation in the Baltic Sea region has repeatedly highlighted the need for resilient and redundant digital infrastructure. In particular, the recent increase in cable damage in the region has underscored the urgency of such measures. Pär Jansson, SVP at GlobalConnect Carrier, emphasizes that adding new routes in and out of the Nordic countries is not just about handling larger data volumes, but also about creating important redundancies. This reduces downtime and the risk of potential sabotage.

The expansion also enables the Nordic countries to meet the rapidly increasing demand for infrastructure and solidify their position as a global hub for data centers. In addition to the submarine cable, GlobalConnect will also modernize its existing terrestrial infrastructure. This includes upgrading 365 kilometers of fiber between Helsinki and the Åland region near Turku, as well as from Stockholm to Gävle. This project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The projects are also intended to create sustainable added value for local regions and communities. The goal is to create as many connections as possible along the cable routes, including for households, hospitals, and businesses. This is intended to provide access to faster digital services, promote local development, and create better conditions for new business startups.
GlobalConnect already operates an extensive fiber network of 244,000 kilometers in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Finland, and has 35,000 square meters of data center space in 17 facilities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Germany.
